00:00 In 1913, a small advertisement appeared in a London newspaper.
00:06 MEN WANTED For hazardous journey, small wages, bitter cold,
00:07 long months of complete darkness, constant danger. Safe return doubtful,
00:09 honour and recognition in case of success. -Ernest Shackleton
00:16 My name is Patrick Bergel.
00:19 And my great-grandfather's name is Sir Ernest Shackleton.
00:23 My great-grandfather's dream was to be the first to cross the Antarctica.
00:26 But tragedy struck soon, Shackleton's ship was trapped in pack ice within a month of arrival.
00:32 At that point, his mission changed from completing the journey, to basic survival.
00:38 He gave up the crossing, instead doing everything he could to save his 27 crew members.
00:44 My name is Tim Fright and I'm the great-grandnephew of Frank Wild,
00:47 who was the only man to have taken part in all of Shackleton's expeditions.
00:51 I'm the great-great-granddaughter of John Vincent.
00:57 Had they not come back, obviously we wouldn't be here now.
01:02 If he didn't get back, I wouldn't be here. So I'm very proud of what he'd done.
01:13 This marks the 100th year since my great-grandfather succeeded in saving his crew.
01:18 And in so doing, gave up his dream.
01:21 At long last, carrying with me the names of his men and messages from their descendants,
01:27 I'm going to try to fulfill my great-grandfather's dream.

02:55 It's tough going.
02:56 But how much harder would this have been a hundred years ago?
03:10 No roads, no people, no night.
03:13 Surrounded by nothingness, I journeyed across Antarctica for 30 days.
03:26 Finally, I reached the place my great-grandfather dreamed of, a hundred years ago.
04:02 To my great-grandfather,
04:05 I'm here at last.
04:08 I came with your crew and their descendants.
04:28 I think it's fantastic that a hundred years on, the expedition is able to be completed.
04:33 Thank you very much for taking my grandfather on board your ship.
04:37 and creating such an adventure.
04:40 I would say his spirit is eternal. It lives on. That's why we are all here.
04:58 Shackleton's expedition did not fail.
05:01 It just took a hundred years to complete.
05:05 There is no greater journey than the pursuit of a dream.
